Tawâw! Welcome!

As long as the sun shines, the river flows and the grass grows.

Red Earth Cree Nation, or Mîhkoskowakâhk Nêhiyawak, is part of Treaty 5 territory. Mihkoskiwakak Nehiyawak is located 225 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert. The Red Earth Indian Reserve (IR) 29 and Carrot River Indian Reserve 29A combined make up the reserve lands of Mîhkoskowakâhk Nêhiyawak. The Red Earth territory includes portions of four of the major terrain areas in this section of the province, including the Pasquia Hills, the hill flank, the Carrot River plain, and the Saskatchewan River delta. The traditional territory of the Red Earth Crees encompasses lands and waterways north to the Saskatchewan River, east to Sipanok Channel, south to the foothills of Pasqua Hills towards Arborfield, and east just before Nipawin, Saskatchewan. The reserve lands of the Red Earth Cree Nation are situated in the middle of the Cumberland Delta, along a natural levee of the Carrot River waterway, surrounded by wetlands, lakes, and the fringe of the boreal forest.

Mîhkoskowakâhk Nêhiyawak: The Red Earth Cree Nation History Booklet (2024)

This booklet celebrates the voices and stories of Red Earth Cree Nation. Through the leadership of our Chief and Council, Elders, and Nation Rebuilding Committee, and in partnership with students from the University of Alberta, we have gathered our collective history, from our hereditary leaders and Treaty 5 ancestors to the land, language, and culture that continue to define us today.
